I think this quote is saying that a person cannot achieve success without striving for success. If a person wants something, they should work for it. No pain, no game is the best saying to sum this quote up.
I think you're correct, because success can only be achieved through failure and mistakes. You must go through obstacles to get to the better place you are trying to be.
